Well-Adjusted: The Chiropractor's Corner

Spine Work and Treadmills for Old Age

Clayton Simmons

Despite the benefits of exercise, many seniors don't do it regularly. With these people in mind, Roger Russo, a chiropractor in Congers, New York, developed Stay Fit Seniors. This program combines strength training, aerobic exercise, and chiropractic treatment to boost the health of clients 60 and over. The combination of exercise and chiropractic treatment helps seniors maintain physical health and reduce aging pains. Since its inception five years ago, Stay Fit Seniors has expanded to chiropractor's offices throughout the country. Even Jack LaLanne, the American health icon-who continues to exercise two hours a day at 94-has endorsed the program.

In Simplicity Lies Pain Relief

Hippocrates, the "father of medicine," recommended manipulation of the spine for low back pain in the 5th century BCE. Together with some aspirin or ibuprofen, that's still the most effective treatment, new research concludes. Published in The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the study reviewed literature on treatments for lumbar degenerative disc disease, a common cause of low back pain. In most cases, the authors conclude, symptoms resolve when a healthcare provider, such as a chiropractor or physical therapist, physically manipulates the back and the patient takes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or a variety of prescription painkillers.

Pain at Wounded Knee

Clayton Simmons

Osteoarthritis is a crippling disease that affects about 15 percent of adults over 50 years old. Drugs are often the treatment of choice, and nonpharmacologic therapies for the condition have been ill-studied. But new research indicates that physical therapy administered by chiropractors may be effective. The study compared a technique for knee osteoarthritis-the Macquarie Injury Management Group knee protocol-with sham treatment in 43 participants. After two weeks, those receiving the Macquarie protocol reported less pain and better ability to move the knee, whereas those in the sham group did not notice any changes.
