A Quick Fix for Mind and Body

Joshua Gowin

running girlHow can you boost your memory, ward off depression, and improve cardiovascular function all at once? Far from being a newfound miracle drug, evidence continues to mount for the benefits of exercise. A recent publication helps elucidate how a jog in the park could help you study for a test, and it has to do with a molecule called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF. When you get your blood flowing, your brain releases more BDNF, which can help nerve cells form new connections. What’s more, having higher levels of BDNF helps stave off the symptoms of depression. Now all you have to do is find more time in your day to exercise.

Eat Right, Feel Great

fishWhen dealing with health problems, sometimes help can be no further than your pantry. Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for men and women, can be combatted through simple additions to your diet. A recent review of studies shows that fish, nuts, and other foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids not only treat cardiovascular disease but can help prevent it by lowering triglyceride levels. Omega-3 rich foods, part of a well-balanced diet, also appear to improve cholesterol profiles. When it comes to your heart, a healthy diet is more palatable than cardiovascular complications, so eat up!
